The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth emblem contains the pelican, the ancient symbol of divine love. The pelican is shown feeding its young from its own essence, symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and love for others. The outstretched wings are a sign of the all – embracing love of the Sisters of Charity reaching out to the world.

The Academy of Saint Elizabeth, established in 1860, is the oldest high school for girls in the state of New Jersey. Saint Elizabeth's is an independent, Roman Catholic college preparatory school for grades 9-12.

Our rich history is the result of the foresight, courage, and determination of the Sisters of Charity and the legacy of their foundress, Mother Mary Xavier, who was commissioned in 1859 by Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley to establish a school for young women in New Jersey. A tradition of excellence was born the following year, excellence that has continued well into modern times as witnessed by the success of our many alumnae who have taken leadership positions in the government, society, medicine, the law, business and finance, academia, the arts, and in religious life.

The Sisters of Charity hold that the education of women has been significantly formative as attitudes about the roles and functions of women in the Church and society have improved over the years. Therefore, students are encouraged to use and develop their abilities to approach problems logically, to seek truth and to recognize it without bias, to analyze and make critical judgments, and to study the past in order to gain insight into present problems and conditions.
