MARIS STELLA is located on ten acres of land, sandwiched between Barnegat
Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, in Harvey Cedars, New Jersey. It provides a
ministry of hospitality, offering space and encouragement to individuals and
groups seeking physical, psychological and spiritual enrichment. It is also
a place for study and reflection on the sacredness of creation.
The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, whose motherhouse is at Convent
Station, New Jersey purchased the Harvey Cedars property in 1959 with the
intention of providing a place for retreats and vacations for the community
members. They named the complex MARIS STELLA, (Star of the Sea).
In time, MARIS STELLA welcomed women from other religious congregations,
youth and adult groups, parish staffs and other lay groups.
MARIS STELLA offers and atmosphere of prayer and quiet, where retreatants
and visitors can enjoy the beauty and serenity of the location, whether
praying in the chapel, walking or sitting quietly by the Bay or Ocean.
The power of the Ocean, the peace of the Bay and the grandeur of the Sunsets
serve as a testimony to the wonders of God's Creation

will broaden our understanding of how our ministry fits into the challenge
of transforming the earth.
Maris Stella, located on the Atlantic Ocean in New Jersey, provides a rich
resource for personal and communal nourishment for the mission and for the
renewal of the earth. Maris Stella is a center that provides a ministry of
