Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan could not have foreseen the
directions that ministry would be taking in the last minutes before the
Millennium: HIV counseling, alcoholism treatment, advocacy for social
justice, ESL programs, and other emerging ministries. These efforts have
opened up new avenues for expressing the fundamental charism of the Sisters
of Charity.
We serve in a wide variety of settings. From Alaska to El Salvador, in
Haiti, in classrooms, shelters, corporate board rooms, courts, and operating
rooms we are there. The traditional ministry of education has evolved as our
urban schools have changed to respond to the needs of new people in an
ever-changing environment. Sisters work in sponsored institutions (a
college, five academies, five hospitals, and a center for women), and in
parishes, schools, hospitals, agencies, and other educational or health care
settings.
Teachers, therapists, physicians, nurses, social workers, pastoral
associates, and administrators, Sisters of Charity are to be found whenever
they have discerned a call to serve others, especially the poor. The
Congregation is committed to advocacy for systemic social change, attempting
to influence public policy on behalf of justice for racial and ethnic
minorities; full participation of women in the Church and in society;
delivery of quality health care and social services to the poor and quality
educational opportunities for all.
