The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth emblem contains the pelican, the ancient symbol of divine love. The pelican is shown feeding its young from its own essence, symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and love for others. The outstretched wings are a sign of the all – embracing love of the Sisters of Charity reaching out to the world.

The Academy of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic high school for young women, owned and operated by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth of Convent Station. It has educated young women from its founding in 1868 up to the present time. It is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. The staff consists of Sisters of Charity and laymen and women totaling 25. School enrollment averages 160 students in grades 9-12.

They have provided the people of Hoboken with their only Catholic high school alternative. The Impetus for this small learning community comes from a philosophic tradition that combines the Gospel values of love and reverence with the democratic ideal of responsible citizenship.

In educational standards, Sacred Heart maintains the best traditions of its early principles. The tendency of later years to discontinue the classical courses in favor of less cultured curricula, learning to purely utilitarian studies, has not been fostered by our Academy. The high school maintains the full classical course of study together with a full complement of math, science, business, computer, and vocational courses. The Academy from its earliest years cultivated ideals that modern ideas have not supplanted; the basic trend of its educational development is to mould the heart of youth on religious principles and complement them by close attention to a liberal arts education.
