The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth emblem contains the pelican, the ancient symbol of divine love. The pelican is shown feeding its young from its own essence, symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and love for others. The outstretched wings are a sign of the all – embracing love of the Sisters of Charity reaching out to the world.

St. Mary's Hospital was founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth in response to the urgent medical needs of the community. Since then, St. Mary's has grown and evolved into a 200-bed hospital that offers a vast array of services and programs. With a staff of nearly 850 employees, St. Mary's serves as a major employer in Passaic. They provide residents from Passaic, Bergen, and Essex counties with a state-of-the-art facility for their healthcare needs and an educational center for healthcare information.
