The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth emblem contains the pelican, the ancient symbol of divine love. The pelican is shown feeding its young from its own essence, symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and love for others. The outstretched wings are a sign of the all – embracing love of the Sisters of Charity reaching out to the world.

What is discernment?
Discernment is listening. Listen. Listen and pay attention to God’s voice in prayer and in the concrete experiences of your life through people and events. These are instruments of God’s voice to us.

Discernment is a decision making process that enables you to understand as much as is possible what God’s desire is in regards to a particular decision. Discernment is only used when deciding major decisions in one’s life. It is a process that requires a commitment of prayer, work, trust and time. It is usually done with another person you trust and can share with honestly. A decision to enter Religious life requires a discernment process that takes from six months to a year. A decision to enter a particular community is a gradual mutual discernment. The Vocation Director or Admissions director in the name of the community enters into the discernment process with you.

What is the mission of the Sisters of Charity?
Jesus Christ came "to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favor" ( Luke 4: 18-19) The mission of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth is to proclaim and live this gospel of Jesus Christ. In the tradition of Saint Vincent de Paul our Congregation participates in the mission of the Church fundamentally through ministry supported and nourished by prayer and vowed life in community. From the beginning our ministry has encompassed commitments in education, health care, and pastoral and social services. Strengthened by the gift of the Eucharist we pledge to pour ourselves out in service to our neighbor. In communion with other disciples we participate in the mission of the Church as it works to transform the world in charity, justice and peace.
